The best way to boost your personal development is by using a personal development plan. This will help you to keep on track with your personal growth and will act as a road map to make sure that you are on your way to reaching your goal.

Start your personal development plan with a goal – something that you’re aiming to achieve in life.

It’s best to work on one goal at a time. You’ll be more focused and will be amazed at how much faster you reach the goal than if you split your focus over lots of different ideas. Imagine what it would feel like if you managed to achieve one goal every month or two, rather than being disheartened at not achieving any of the countless goals that appear monotonously, year after year, on your resolutions list.

That’s the difference that using a personal development plan like the free one at can make.

Once you’ve decided on a goal for your personal development plan, the next step is to make sure that it comes to fruition.

It helps to write out your goal in lots of detail, as though you’ve already achieved it. Write down what you’ll feel like, what you’ll see, what you’ll hear.

If you don’t like writing then create a vision board instead – get a large sheet of paper, pin it up somewhere you’ll see it regularly, and paste photos and other images relating to your goal on it.

Either way, put your goal onto your computer screen saver so that you see it regularly.

And make sure that you do something that’s on your personal development plan each and every day. It doesn’t have to be a big “thing” but it does have to be something!

That way, you’re making progress towards your goal and your subconscious mind will start to come round to the idea that you’re serious about this item on your personal development plan. When your subconscious gets on board with the idea like this, things start to happen fast!

Regardless of your specific goal, whether it be seeking higher education or simply how to better mange your expenses for a brighter future, your personal development plan will help you discover exactly who you are in life and what you want out of your life. Discovering one’s true self and learning how to use your natural talents and personal drives to accomplish your goal is a key component of any personal development plan.

The first step to personal development is accountability. You must first be held responsible for all your actions or inactions. You must step up and finally admit what it is that is holding you back from developing into the person you want to become. For those seeking better money management, admit your splurges, learn how to control or if possible, eliminate some of them altogether, and then you can accomplish a greater sense of satisfaction at the end of the month, instead of spending time on the phone, making arrangements with creditors because you’ve overspent your budget. Accountability is one of the toughest steps to an effective personal development plan. It requires that you be very honest with who you are and what you have been over the past years. The second step to effective personal development is establishing a list of goals. You must figure out exactly where you want to be in life and when exactly do you plan to have it accomplished. The goal setting is the easiest part of personal development. It helps define what you want, where you will get it from, and when you plan to have it. You will already have found that you have created an introductory set of goals when you first started on your personal development strategy. Here is where you will go over your personal goals, eliminate the ones that will not help you meet your end goal, and keep the ones that will help you discover true personal satisfaction. After you have your goals, figure out which ones are short-term goals, or one to five year goals, and which are long term, five to ten year goals. Most importantly, though, be patient and understand success will not come overnight and it will take time, practice, and dedication before you find yourself exactly where you plan to be.

Although personal development is one of the most sought after development plans, it is very stressful. Lifestyles and personal habits will need to be changed or eliminated. A good personal development plan template includes five steps that guide you to take action. When included, these five steps can make your personal action plan simple, yet effective.

In fact, keeping your personal development strategy simple is important when seeking a good template. Why is this important? Because when learning how to write a personal development plan (also referred to as a PD Plan), it is easy to get “analysis paralysis” if your example personal development plan is too complicated.

If you aren’t familiar with the term, “analysis paralysis,” it’s where you are so caught up in your head, that you just keep spinning thoughts around inside without taking any action.

What we want to do here is to identify the five key components to making a simple personal growth plan. These five steps, while they may seem overly simplified, are the core to any plan, whether it is a personal leadership development plan, personal professional development plan or a personal action plan.

So, when you are looking for a good template, the simpler you make it, the faster you can “get down to business” and take action.

So, what are these five key parts your PD planning?

1. Identify goals
2. Prioritize goals
3. Action steps
4. Time line for first action
5. What if I do nothing?

IDENTIFY GOALS: When you start your personal growth plan, of course you’ll want to identify what you want to accomplish. However, here’s where many people make their first mistake by not identifying goals that are truly what they desire or are realistic enough to achieve. Be sure that your goals are what you truly desire at a deep, core level of your being.

PRIORITIZE GOALS: Once you find goals that are “what you want” and not “want someone else wants for you,” and these goals are realistic, there are certain steps to prioritizing these goals using something called, “reverse goal setting.” This is exactly what it sounds like where you take your “end goal” and work backwards writing down each step it took to get there. Like you are walking your goal backwards.

ACTION STEPS: Once you’ve done your reverse goal setting and have a step-by-step map for your personal development strategy, an important part of your PD planning is to find a way to turn these “bread crumbs” you’ve identified as a sequence of goals into a personal action plan. To do this, simply ask yourself, “What can I do today on ‘bread crumb number 1’ to take action?”

TIME LINE FOR ACTION: Any example personal development plan will tell you that you must set out a time line for action. What you want to do is to create daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals for yourself so you stay on track. Be sure with this part of your personal development strategy to keep it realistic with everything else you spend time on in your life.

WHAT IF I DO NOTHING? When you want to develop a personal development plan, it’s easy to be very motivated in the beginning. Your enthusiasm is ample to help you learn how to write a personal development plan and about the various parts of PD planning. After awhile, however, it is easy to set your personal action plan or personal growth plan aside, so one question you’ll want to keep in front of you for motivation is, “What if I do nothing?” This one question can keep you going through the myriad of tasks of putting your template into action.

While finding a good personal development plan template or personal development plan sample isn’t easy at first, using these five steps in learning how to write a personal development plan can get you started. Then you can turn your personal action plan into action, rather than spinning thoughts around and around “thinking” about taking action because your plan is too complicated.

A personal development plan is a map of your self development journey. It is basically a goal setting practice, but specifically for the area of personal development. It is for planning your aspirations in regards to personal development. Among other things, it involves identifying what skills you need to learn, the aspects of yourself needs to be improved, abilities that are you lacking and areas which needs to be given priority for improvement.

In addition to that, because of the nature of self improvement, a personal development plan requires a somewhat different approach to traditional goal setting. Hence this is why we should always have a separate personal development plan for all self improvement goals.

Many people take goal setting very seriously. Especially those who are ambitious and desire success. However, sometimes we tend to focus less on personal development goals. We are usually more focused on health, career and financial goals. Goals in other areas such as religious goals, emotional aspirations and personal development goals are neglected.

The danger in not having personal development goals is as you get more and more caught up in the process of achieving goals, you will unconsciously neglect learning and improving further. Moreover, when people start seeing success, many tend to become complacent and stop their development. It is this complacency that usually causes many successful individuals to consequently fall back and fail.

So one of the main reasons for having a personal development plan is to make sure that we always consistently improve ourselves and prevent complacency from happening. The basic idea behind a personal development plan involves 3 steps;

1. Identify your current situation – What are your strengths, weaknesses, skills, abilities etc. To prepare your personal development plan, you will first need to identify what is your current level.

2. Identify your desired state – What skill level or ability to you wish to have? To achieve the goals that you have, what are the strengths that you need? Which weaknesses must be eliminated? The idea is to focus more on what is needed for your immediate goals or situation. It is not to eliminate all weaknesses and become an expert in everything.

3. Bridging the gap – The last step is to develop a plan to bridge the gap between your current state and your desired state as identified in steps 1 and 2. This includes planning what action to take, which resources to obtain, how to get the resource, setting schedules and finally the overall timeline as well as key milestones of your personal development plan.

The idea behind the personal development plan is pretty simple. However, it is vital that you make sure that you do a proper, detailed personal development plan and have thought through each section comprehensively. This ensures that you will be headed the right way with it.

A personal development plan helps you ensure you are constantly improving your skills, abilities and knowledge. Because at the end of the day, it is your knowledge that ultimately affects the quality of your lives and your level of success you achieve. All us should have a personal development plan.

►About Jim Rohn : Emanuel James Jim Rohn (September 17, 1930 – December 5, 2009) was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. Jim Rohn’s rags to riches story played a large part in Jim Rohn’s work, which influenced others in the personal development industry.

►Emanuel James Jim Rohn was born in Yakima, Washington, to Emanuel and Clara Rohn. Jim Rohn’s owned and worked a farm in Caldwell, Idaho, where Jim Rohn grew up as an only child.

►Jim Rohn started Jim Rohn’s professional life by working as a stock clerk for department store Sears. Around this time, a friend invited Jim Rohn’s to a lecture given by entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff. In 1955, Jim Rohn joined Shoaff’s direct selling business AbundaVita as a distributor.
